What the latest online research tells us

Dennis McCarthy of Convio and I presented on this topic at Fundraising Day New York yesterday.

The big takeaways?

1. Your website is still your most critical online presence.  Don’t neglect it!

2. Integrate your outreach across channels.

3. Remember, technology enables human connection.  It doesn’t create it.  So never lose sight of what motivates people to give: emotional, personal connection and social influences!

That’s such a key point…technology merely creates the contact - it won’t maintain it.

Katya,
The issue that you raise regarding technology and how it only creates a way for people to connect - not an actual connection, really hits home with me.  This is especially true today since more nonprofits are moving away from ‘traditional mediums’ of communication and more toward Facebook and other platforms.  Social media is all about engaging your audience and providing meaningful content for your followers.  If you are providing no value, then your social networking efforts are likely to fail.  When planning out my social media strategy, I find it helpful to ask myself the same questions that my followers will be thinking when they read my posts, “what’s in it for me.”  Keeping this question in mind will ensure that you are providing meaningful, value-added content for your fans.
