Watch how much words matter

I spend a lot of time on this blog talking about how much words matter.
We need to choose words that stir the imagination, spark emotion and transport with story.
Here’s a video, sent to me by Rachel of the Parent Infant Center, that shows this well. The words the woman puts on the sign at the end of the video are impossible to ignore. Why? They forge an emotional connection between the experience of one person with that of another. They make the passersby relate in an entirely different way to what and whom they see.

You made me cry first thing in the morning. This is utterly beautiful Kayta! What a profound, impactful message. Thank you.
I suspect this one will go viral, if it hasn’t already. Meant to be seen.
It is amazing how much of the online marketing conversation has returned to basics. You can know the tech, but if you don’t know how to talk, you’re dead in the water.
Great video. I’ve always believed word choice is important but it suffers when I am under time constraints. The trick, for me, is to plan ahead, pull in others to comment and make suggestions and don’t settle.
I get the simple metaphor, but I read against the grain and took this video as an example of a very unfortunate UK reality.
Here in Canada I work at a national nonprofit for a well-known brain disorder. Our UK sister organizations use pity words like ‘suffering’, ‘affliction’, ‘victim’ and so on to describe affected individuals, just like the well-meaning woman in this video encourages. In North America we champion strength, determination, and point out that the majority of the true problems lie in systemic issues including the ignorant attitudes of others.
In this case, the visually impaired can live long, happy, productive lives. Their true challenges come from the attitudes of others who erect physical and psychological barriers - most often unintentionally - and have since civilization began.
To make it dead simple: the man’s problem isn’t that he can’t see the beautiful day at all, it’s lack of proper accommodation, accessibility, public awareness and acceptance, etc.
Cheers.
Thanks for the powerful message on the use of words. Words can motivate us to give, and can also crush the spirits of others. Lesson for me: watch what I say, and be aware of how I say it.
Just lovely as a reminder of the simple power of the right words. Made me proud to be a journalist. Thanks for sharing.
Very touching video, i’m glad i’ve seen it and I feel like a new man now. Thank you Katya ![]()
That is a very touching story. Although this was a scripted act, it goes to show you that words really do make a difference.
The power of words indeed. Can hurt, can inspire, can encourage, etc. That was a very nice video, Very inspiring. After that video, I started watching the related one too.
This video is really remarkable. Yap buddy I agree with you the words this woman puts on the sign at the end of the video are impossible to ignore. Thanks
