I’m getting teaching at American University this weekend and getting married next weekend. So I’m going to take a little break from the blog - see you back here on September 1.

Congratulations on the wedding. I look forward to your return and more great blog posts.
Katya, I share your and Mark’s disdain for the manipulative tactics so frequently seen in direct marketing. I think Mark knows, and I hope you do too, that most practitioners in the field of direct mail fundraising uphold high professional standards that prevent us from using such gimmicks.
The more serious issue in nonprofit fundraising is that so many organizations still depend on the old churn-and-burn direct mail methods, mailing enormous quantities of donor acquisition packages every year and quietly accepting the sad reality that few of their new donors ever send a second gift. Only when we can disabuse our colleagues of those bad habits will we be prepared to deal straightforwardly with the new generations of donors.
Enjoy your wedding… my sister is also getting married this weekend. ![]()
Congrats. there was an article in the WSJ about getting unplugged (mentioned in my blog tomorrow) that I’m trying to hold to.
