Get Inspired: How to talk about “girls’ empowerment”

Vivid storytelling, powerful language, emotion…  They move us like nothing else.  Please don’t forget this when you engage with others about your cause.

If you are working to empower girls, you could talk about girls’ empowerment while your audience’s eyes glaze over.  You could use words like “positive body image” and “self esteem” and “gender issues.”

Or you could say this: You are not pretty—because you cannot be defined by one word. Here is Katie Makkai with one of the most powerful reflections on what we should tell girls and young women - and a great lesson on how to move and persuade.

We live in a society that puts to much emphasis on looking a certain way to get ahead. People don’t need plastic surgery to improve what the good lord has already made perfect.

Thanks for the share, wonderful presentation. If you can piece out everything good in a person you talk to, you can use it for a good persuasion.

@wayne allen, I absolutely agree. Stereotypes are produced by mass compatibilities..

Argh. Women’s empowerment is so much more than how we look and slam poetry! It’s not even a poem! It’s a rant!

Women’s empowerment is our philosophies, our actions for changing the world.

It’s Girlstart. It’s Women for Women International. It’s the International Women’s Congress. It’s Half the Sky by Kristof and WuDunn. It’s what we do when we’re NOT obsessing about our appearance.

This video does represent what is wrong with our culture, in that it’s about our obsession with how we look. Here’s a test. In the next magazine you pick up, if there’s an ad in there for liposuction or makeup, that magazine is not there to make you feel good about how you look. So you can put it down and go on to the next one, which is hopefully Mother Jones or Adbusters or Maker Magazine.

There is nothing wrong with looking good for the people you care about. When my wife takes care of her looks, I know she still cares about me and my feelings and she still cares about herself. Someone that don’t care how they look to others usually has some issues. Fat people are not only “harmful” to others but are harmful to themselves. A woman obsessed with her looks with getting endless plastic surgeries is not doing it because of societal pressure, she is doing it because of psychological problems.
