4 marketing facts for 2012

ClickZ has some excellent marketing trends to share.  The whole story is here, but if you don’t have time to read it, I offer these highlights:

1. Email is still the best way to reach most people, so focus on building your lists in 2012.

2. Consumers are “device indifferent,” meaning they are using many forms of technology.  You need to think about how to reach them wherever they are - and that means coordinated outreach across different types of technology, including mobile (phones and tablets).

3. Social media has come of age and it requires the same approach - integrated with other forms of outreach.

4. Content remains king.  If you want people to care, give them great information, stories and pictures. Outreach in any form is ineffective if it’s not engaging!

I like that phrase “device indifferent.” I don’t think that people are quite media type indifferent yet though.  It still means more getting something in print than it does via email.

Maybe one way to distinguish yourself is to use print media with quality graphics and paper.

The issue of mobile-compatability has been on us for a while now, i’ve certainly seen how it changes the way people interact with my website. It’s fascinating to see Linkedin recieving more unique visitors than Twitter - is this because everyone already has a Twitter account?

You make a great point that with all the new technology, what is at the core is great content.  Great reminder for nonprofits to not neglect the message as we try so hard to keep up with technology!

My son works for Microsoft and he says that in meetings two things come up:
1. Everything is about mobile and tablets
2. The next big thing is HTML5
