Your tip of the day: Ideas in, ideas out

If you are seeking to be more creative in 2013, I strongly recommend Steal Like an Artist: 10 Things Nobody Told You About Being Creative.  I spent this past weekend reading and re-reading this unconventional little book, and it was a revelation.

Above all, it reminded me that the opposite of “garbage in, garbage out” is “ideas in, ideas, out.” Or “brilliance in, brilliance out” if it’s a really good day.  Your mind is what you feed it.  So be happy if you have endless curiosity about what smart people think.  I certainly do.

If you want to be more creative this year, read, watch and look at smart things.  “Ideas in” yield amazing ideas from you. The more you fill yourself up with an array of brilliance, the better thinker you will be.

New year’s resolution?  Steal like an artist.

This is wonderful - I knew of Austin’s book but it had fallen off my radar… thanks for the reminder, it’s now on my wish list smile I’m also reading The Creativity Habit by Twyla Tharp which I highly recommend—it has a similar premise, that creativity comes from habits & what you surround yourself with, versus “magic.” Off to go surround myself with some wonderful things!

So true! I will definitely have to check out that book. I recently heard a radio interview with an architect who was saying that anyone who suggests they have uniquely creative ideas is full of rubbish. Paraphrasing him: “I take bits and pieces of my clients’ inspiration, add some of my own that I’ve gleaned from others, and put it together into a nice whole.”
