Top online marketing mistakes - and how to avoid them

Prestige Marketing emailed me this nifty infographic today. (Click here if you can’t see it well.)
If I had to apply this to nonprofits, I’d modify this a bit. Our mistake is rarely too much advertising instead of content marketing - because we can’t afford ads!
Here are the top nonprofit variations of these errors:
1. Me-me messaging: The corollary of too much advertising on social media with for-profits is too much promotional content on social media. Does your content read like an ad?
2. Lackluster content: Not enough new, interesting stories about the difference your work makes in the world.
3. No personality: Talking like an organization instead of a person working for your cause.
4. No action: Failing to provide simple, clear and easy calls to action.
5. Writing off email: It’s still powerful and important. Are you efforts reflecting that?

Interesting info, but, I tell you what - that graphic of a “woman over 40” alienated this 39-year-old woman from Prestige Marketing, that’s for sure!
A couple of people have complained about that! Yes, I’m 44 (almost 45) and don’t yet have a gray bun and granny glasses.
I do, sadly, see all these mistakes happening all the time. Surprisingly, #4 is often the biggest mistake I see being made. With all the me-me messaging going on, you’d think we’d also be aggressive about calling for the action. We’re still stuck, it seems, in thinking that just because we’re ‘good guys’, people will spontaneously give to us. Sigh…
As a nonprofit with zero marketing budget I appreciate the tips and will try to avoid the pitfalls you’ve highlighted - creating good content is a full-time but necessary job!
