Nonprofit websites even worse than government ones…

Oh me oh my! Here at the Nonprofit Technology Conference (NTC) in San Francisco, ForeSee has released a report saying nonprofit websites score a mediocre 73 out of 100 on their quality scale, a point behind E-government sites.

Here’s the report. Apparently the problem is poor communication about what nonprofits do and functionality that is lacking.

We need to fix this, because as the report says:

One in five visitors to a website are there to make a donation!

Half are more likely to give if it’s a good website!

a nonprofit website must provide contact information for the organization or for individual staff members and must supply information about the organization and its work or areas of expertise.

The generational divide is so much more prevalent and harmful to the sector than the digital divide. The Boomers that run organizations from staff or board positions don’t get it. It’s what their kids do, not what grown-ups should have to do.

I don’t know if I would depricate government sites anymore - as of this past week they just got a LOT better - the Obama administration announced a concerted effort to engage the public and make government more transparent through the internet - besides great looking Facebook, Myspace, and Twitter properties, they are maintaining presences on Flickr (fantastic photostream), Youtube, Vimeo, and iTunes:

I’m currently redesigning a not for profit website. I want to find images to use in a heading graphic, but I’m not sure of what the copyright issues would be for a nonprofit site…can anyone help? If you know of good rights free images, please post them. Thank you in advance for your help!Well yes, Communist Russia under any of the secretaries, Hitlers Germany, Pol Pots Kampuchea, Papa Doc Duvalier’s Haiti and Castro’s Cuba + There are Governments in Africa and Asia which would make you cry if you had any tears left so even asking this question is evidence of a tabloid mentality, you really should be better informed before you whine about the government. I’m not really bothered about the 10 points for this one!

We all know that financial resources are an important asset for non-profit organizations. Non-profits simply don’t have the luxury to spend on projects or events that do not contribute to the accomplishment of their goals, whatever these may be.
